New Kitchen

For those that know me, I’ve been engaged in redoing our kitchen for a while now. It was supposed to be something we did right after we got the house. Fast-forward to 3 years later and it’s now finally done. It is awesome, make no mistake. It’s the kind of kitchen that makes me say “F*#$ YEAH!” every time I go into it. Or look at it. Or think about it. Well, you get the idea.

This was the first major undertaking we’ve ever done, and I have to say it went very well. The contractor that was referred to us by our designer was awesome. He is the type of person that wants everything perfectly level and plumb and makes his measurements exact. In fact, the biggest issue we have (and still have) is with the cabinet makers (Quaker Maid). 4 or 5 of the cabinets were not square. This led to us having a gap where the cabinets met the refrigerator panel. In the end, our contractor (Mehran) had to take the backs off the cabinets and fix them himself.

Another unbelievable problem we had with one of our cabinets is that there’s a handprint on one side. At first we thought it was dust, but no. It was someone’s fingers that somehow got into the lacquer. Nice job. Turns out its on the inside too. We had to order new panels to cover the sides up. We got them in the other week but guess what? They were the wrong size. So now we are waiting again.

Even with all that, things went very smoothly and everything came out exceptionally well. I’ve chronicled most of the work on my Flickr page, but I have yet to put up some final pictures showing the doors and the handles all on.

It took us forever to decide on the final paint color. There are two sections I actually had to paint twice because we thought we liked the color but it turned out to be hideous under incandescent light at night. So we picked some alternates that actually came out great. We also started using a very dark brown (to match our cabinets) on all the baseboards which will later extend to the beams, posts and all the trim throughout the house. It should be pretty cool.

The sad part is now the other half of our house looks terribly outdated. That’s for next year :-P I plan to continue to use Mehran for all my future work because I know it will get done quickly and above all correctly. But we’ll enjoy our new kitchen for a while before getting caught up juggling furniture around again. Time to relax.
