I’m mostly writing this to see how good or bad I can predict. I’ve been pondering the whole death of Starbuck and the line that’s supposed to come up in tonight’s episode about “We’re all cylons.”. Of course, the second Starbuck bought it, I thought “she must be a cylon then”. Why spend all those episodes talking about her destiny only to have her die. Putting myself into a writer’s shoes, it just doesn’t make much sense.

But of course you listen to Ron Moore’s podcast and he’s all dramatic about how they felt you know what, she need needs to die. And the part about how the called her up to break the news to her. There’s also the fact that she grew up and had a mother. Of course, one could argue that either

those memories are fake

the final 5 cylons are hybrids

What’s stuck in my brain now is the part where the cylon tells her about there being nothing wrong with death and some line about the space in between life and death. Which is of course where the Deanna model of cylon kept trying to get to to see the final 5 cylons.

So I say Starbuck might return tonight and change everything. To what, I have no idea. If they are all cylons, then what? Why race the other cylons to Earth after all. Why continue the series? Unless they take a tack of “well, we’re the good cylons” or something equally ridiculous. I don’t know. Guess I’ll know in an hour or two!

Last night I watchd Stargate on Blu-ray. It looked really good, but I’m wondering why the heck the subtitles didn’t show up when they were talking “Egyptian”. I had to manually turn them on, which of course, then gave me subtitles when they were saying everything. Scanning the web this seems to be an issue with the disk (I hope — it would be unfortunate if it were a blu-ray limitation and would likely flip me to HD-DVD). I’d hate that you couldn’t get partial subtitles on a movie, as you need in this one or possibly at the beginning of Hunt for Red October, etc.

One amusing note was that I started listening to the commentary track for a while and they were very adamant they had nothing to do with the series. That’s sad to me as I really enjoy the series (though since Sci-Fi’s had it it hasn’t been as good). It’s not unexpected though that they don’t like from past stuff I’ve read.

Another interesting thing is that in this version (which I also have the DVD of), they show extra scenes, including glimpses of some petrified ‘gods’ that apparently tried to come through the gate and got embedded in the rock. I had thought they were just buried with the stargate after the revolution, but the commentary says they tried to come through. It certainly isn’t clear from the movie, but I like that explanation a lot better.

And of course, you always have to wonder as you watch it why the computers were already set up for 7 symbols when he cracks the secret of the glyphs. That takes so much away from it. I realize they want to get on their journey quickly, but they could have at least had a scene or two in-between where they figure out how to dial it. I dunno. Something. Anything.

Anyhoo… geektime over.

Last night I was watching BSG and as they were talking about seeing the faces of the 5 cylons, I all of a sudden had this weird OMG moment where I realized that the temple was called the Temple of Five. It cannot be a coincidence that the same temple where the hybrid tells Baltar and Deanna she can see the faces of the missing 5 cylons has just such a name.

Then I started to think… There are 12 models of cylons. There are 12 Lords of Kobol (12 signs of the zodiac). Um, hello? Now I’m starting to think the gods were cylons and then the humans left them and created a new race of cylon, etc. and this all plays out in some cyclical fashion or something (they keep alluding to the fact that ‘all of this has happened before and all of this will happen again).

What does it all mean? It means that these two races are far more intertwined then we ever would have believed before. Anyway, that’s where my BSG mind is right now. We’ll see how it plays out I guess.

A friend sent me a link that eventually led here.

Now, when I originally saw Stargate, I thought for sure there’d be a SG II, but it never happened. Now the creator wants to make II and III 12 years later. But see, for the past 10 years, there’s been a series running (now two series). So I just don’t get it.

I’m also not sure how true it is when he says there was always supposed to be a trilogy, and by chance (who’d have thunk it) the second movie takes places 12 years later. Sounds a bit suspicious to me. But still, I’d love to know what he has in mind to complete the original story. At the same time though, considering that SG-1 the series starts 1 year after the original movie, I’m not sure how this second movie is supposed to work. It’s supposed to continue its own mythos, and yet it’s said that the series could still work after the 3rd movie. I don’t understand how this is possible unless it involves the much-played-out technique of time travel (“we have to fix the past!”… yawn). I can only sit here and hope it’s something better.

There were definite differences between the movie and the series. The Jaffa didn’t exist in the movie. The Jaffa-like people in the movie were actually other gods (Anubis and Horus). And the alien wasn’t a snake-like parasite, though he did certainly take over a human host. He was supposedly the last of his kind, not one of many. So when the series picked up, they tried to patch up the differences, etc. and it mostly worked since not a lot of detail was actually said about the aliens in the movie, particularly Anubis and Horus. This gave them the leeway they needed to build a series. I completely understand why they changed what they did and why they did for the series (“Hey look! A dialing device!”). I am just concerned now that a return to the original concept in a new movie might be a bit odd.

So while I’d love to see it, I also think this might be a very bad idea. I also get suspicious when people want to pick up the continuation of a movie many years later. Usually, the person is older and thinks a bit differently than they did back when the first movie was done, so I fear it may be disjointed. Maybe Dean will want to put walkie talkies in place of guns this time. Who knows. To be safe though, I think he should send me his treatment(s) and I’ll give my official thumbs up or down.

When the movie Stargate came out, I went and saw it. I thought it was pretty cool at the time. Later I bought the movie (on Laserdisc no less) to keep. But I really hadn’t watched it in years.

But recently, I started to get sucked into the two Stargate series that are running (SG-1 and Atlantis). I originally started on Atlantis, the newer of the two, but lately I’ve been watching lots of SG-1 and really enjoying it as well (actually, more). The sad part is that I never watched the series when it was originally on. I remember seeing mention of SG-1, but it was so long ago (about 9 years apparently) and never really knew the series was even there. At the time I had thought SG-1 was a made for cable movie and that was that, but I never watched it.

But I’ve gotten so into it that I’ve been buying each season and watching it. I’ve watched all of season 1 of Atlantis, and I’m now up to season 4 of SG-1. I watch like 2 or 3 a night on average, and I think it might be time for an intervention But seriously, I really enjoy it. I like the humor and the whole notion of aliens posing as our ancient gods that made the original Movie so enjoyable. I also like the references to other sci-fi series like Star Trek or the like. I also remember the McGuyver reference in the first episode of SG-1.

I and my TiVo give it three thumbs up.

I must confess I’m a bit dismayed at the way Battlestar Galactica has been the past 2 episodes. They just didn’t fly with me much at all, especially this last one. I’m warning you now that if you are not caught up, don’t read any more.

The previous episode where Roslin is about to die and is saved at the last minute was really good, up until the point where Baltar reads the letter and gets angry because Roslin tells him he needs people skills. Angry to the point of handing a nuke over to the corporeal 6. I’m sorry, but that stretches plausibility to the breaking point in my mind. I know he thinks he’s great and all, but at least from past indications he seems like he’d generally agree with everything the president had written. He’s just being weird. And a different weird than what made him so interesting before.

And this latest episode about Apollo seems to have come from left field. I mean, what the hell was that all about. Maybe it will be clear in a future episode? I dunno. But Apollo all of a sudden has decided he doesn’t like living as of Resurrection Ship part 2? When he first said he wished they hadn’t gotten there in time, I figured maybe he had become disillusioned by his father and the president’s decision to off Admiral Kane. But now I don’t know what his problem is.

Any why the heck would Dee even be all ‘is this going anywhere’. I mean, I remember the ep where she and Apollo are fighting and there’s a moment. The moment was an interesting thing, but this conversation in this recent episode just seemed too overt and quite frankly pointless.

I’m also kinda miffed that they offed the new Pegasus commander so quickly. I liked his character a lot and I thought he’d be one of those are-they-really-friendly-or-not people that might add an interesting dynamic. I clearly need to listen to the podcasts for these shows to find out what the heck they were thinking.

I dunno. I mean, despite the general plot differences, both this and the old series saw Kobol and found Pegasus. But the Pegasus was lost in the original and Commander Adama was still Commander Adama. Well, I guess there was no president in the original to promote him, but still, it seems now that they’ve decided that they payed enough homage to the original and now they’re off in some new direction. I’m going to wait and see how it goes. I hope it’s good. It better be, as up until these last wacky turns, this was by far the best show probably on TV as a whole. Amazing acting and crazy plot twists that gave shows like 24 a run for their money. Don’t mess it up!

PS: I am listening to the podcasts now, and apparently Ron Moore didn’t really like the last episode much either.
